During the 16 years since it was established Acorn Nursery School has enjoyed the highest reputation for pre-school nursery education. Kaleidoscope bought Acorn Nursery School in April 2003 with a view to continuing the emphasis on quality early education. Our staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience of the needs of very young children and we aim to provide a loving, family atmosphere where every child can flourish, be happy and make friends. After listening to the needs of the community we extended our opening hours and we are now open for 51 weeks of the year and we are able to provide wrap around care. In September 2006 OFSTED amended our registration and we can now take children from 18 months.
We know that young children learn best through play and by providing high quality equipment and highly trained staff we can help them to develop creative and manipulative skills in a happy, informal but properly supervised environment.
We think it is important to teach our children to learn sabout and love the environment from a very young age. We grow our own organic vegetables and flowers and go out on many nature walks.
Our school is bright and spacious with the benefit of an outdoor play area in the extensive landscaped grounds of St Olave's School. We are situated within walking distance of the City centre and have easy access from the A1237 York ring road.
Our Curriculum
Acorn Nursery School is fully registered with Ofsted. Within the framework of Birth to
Three Matters and the Foundation Stage Curriculum we ensure that children are treated holistically where they can learn to explore and investigate.
Because we are a small setting we get to know your child on a one-to-one basis and we put great emphasis on catering for the needs of the individual child, regardless of chronological age and development. As part of a living multi cultural society we celebrate many festivals during the year and have established links with local communities and the Doshisha Kindergarten in Japan. Above all we aim to give your child the finest possible preparation to cope with the demands of full time education.
Our Staff
We select our staff carefully to ensure that we provide a good range of age and experience. We value them highly and want them to enjoy coming to work as this will ensure a happy atmosphere - so essential if your child is to feel loved and secure. All our staff are offered regular training to update and extend their skills and knowledge.
Food and Drink
We provide milk and nutritious snacks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Please refer to the snack menu on display in the Nursery. Children staying over the lunch hour, or for a full day, bring a packed lunch.
Sessions
Nursery School Sessions are as follows,
Morning 8.00 am to 12 noon Afternoon 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm
Term dates coincide with many of the York Schools. We also offer full day care from 8.00 am to 5.30 pm. Children can take any combination of places, from a minimum of 2 sessions up to five full days. However, many of our 3 year olds attend either 5 mornings or 5 afternoons, using the free Nursery Education Grant to contribute to fees.
Holiday Care
Our new holiday club is proving very popular with all children up to the age of 8. We guarantee a fun filled experience whenever school is closed, except Bank Holidays and one week at Christmas.
